The project was initiated by Dr. Jan Richarz, German architectural historian and Master Builder of Aachen Cathedral, whose expertise and passion for historic architecture have made possible this fusion of research, architecture, and modern presentation.
Thoughtfully designed lighting creates evocative scenes of light and shadow, revealing layers of soil, masonry, stones, and sacred relics from centuries gone by. Combined with the storytelling elements of the audio guide, this interplay produces an atmospheric experience that doesn’t just narrate history — it makes it come alive.
To allow flexible responses to new archaeological discoveries, the selected luminaires and cables have been equipped with a special magnetic mounting system. This enables the positions of the lights to be easily adjusted as excavations evolve — a concept that seamlessly unites scientific precision with artistic design.
