A breathtaking view on Florence

A new light is shining on the bronze replica of David at Piazzale Michelangelo with the permanent installation that Firenze Smart, an in-house company of the Municipality of Florence, offered the city.

On the occasion of F-Light | Florence Light Festival promoted by the Municipality of Florence, some of the most important squares and monuments in Florence have been lit up until January, 9 2022. Beside temporary settings, Firenze Smart, an in-house company of the Municipality of Florence, enriched the city nightscape with the donation of three new permanent lighting installations involving the David monument in Piazzale Michelangelo, the bell tower of Badia, and the façade of the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella.

Located on the world renowned panoramic terrace in 1873, the monument of Piazzale Michelangelo is made up of the bronze replica of Michelangelo Buonarroti’s David, four bronze copies of the Allegories of the Medici Chapels in San Lorenzo and a marble base. This David’s statue is a copy of the most breathtaking masterpiece of Michelangelo, whose original in gleaming white marble can be found in the Accademia Gallery of Florence, and is universally recognized as one of the emblems of the Renaissance as well as of Florence and Italy.

Part of an intense restoration programme of Florentine artistic works, this symbol of Florence in the world has been renovated according to an innovative cultural and technical concept. The restoration has been carried out in front of the public, with minimal scaffolding set up around the sculptures, as well as real-time information panels. Throughout the works, webcams could be viewed by citizens and tourists who could thus better understand the meaning and value of this requalification. After the Florence Night festival, the monument enjoys now, beside a renovated appearance, also a brand new lighting aimed at further enhancing the recent restoration.

In cooperation with our Italian distributor Ombre-1 S.r.l., Firenze Smart SILFIspa has installed around the bronze statue of David at Piazzale Michelangelo 6 units of CAPITAL 100 MC in RGBW configuration fitted with either medium or narrow optics. Responding to aesthetic appeal and chromatic adaptability criteria, CAPITAL 100 MC is capable of enhancing with seamless light distribution and smooth color transition the most diversified architectural elements. In this case, its RGB+4000K natural white LEDs delivers an even white light in the required color temperature, allowing at the same time the largest range of pastel tones assortment for special initiatives, celebrations or events. Consuming one sixth of a domestic counter, these LED fixtures can be remotely controlled via a new data transmission system that makes it possible to set up the starting, intensity and chromaticity of the light, according to predefined schemes.

The breathtaking view on Florence from Piazzale Michelangelo is now even more impressive. We are happy and honoured of being part of this cultural renovation which means rebirth and restart for a city and a whole country.
