THE e18hteen, Lusail City

Qatar
BACKGROUND

THE e18hteen is an eye-catching, futuristic commercial building that offers luxury services, amenities, and dedicated facilities to its tenant companies. Located on the edge of the Marina District in Lusail City, the 36-floor high-rise will offer over 2,500 professionals the possibility to enjoy their work while taking advantage of functional retail facilities, a gym, and an Executive Club.

Overlooking the turquoise Arabian Gulf, the silhouette of THE e18hteen tower recalls a Qatari dhow, a typical sailing boat. The architectural features of the tower mimic a sail, perfectly blending with the elegant marine environment of Lusail City. Covering an area of approximately 38 Km2, Lusail City has been designed with sustainability in mind to offer adequate civic, commercial and leisure amenities to the ever-expanding population of Qatar.

Awarded as "Best Commercial High-Rise Development – Qatar” at the Arabian Property Awards, THE e18hteen is set to become one of the leading commercial properties in Qatar, and a pivotal destination within the World Cup 2022 proceedings and Qatar Vision 2030.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

Inspired by the glamorous imagery of the Gulf and positioned on the edge of the Marina District at Lusail, THE e18hteen was designed to architecturally evoke the beauty of a billowing sail on a Qatari Dhow. The futuristic graphic display of the main glass façade was required to promote its night time impact through innovative high-tech lighting equipment with single-pixel management creating strikingly appealing dynamic effects.

LIGHTING CONCEPT

MBL (Mulvey & Banani Lighting) is a seasoned, award-winning lighting design consultancy, delivering purposeful and sustainable lighting installations worldwide. MBL has approached the spatial experience of the property with a focus to create drama and allow the local organic cultural backgrounds to unfold providing a comfort level that ensures it is a space worth experiencing.

The character and texture of the lighting takes its inspiration from the reflection of a sail on the sea, or the silhouette of a sail in the calm waters in early morning light. The faceted geometry of the "sail” is echoed by the diagonal lines of light zigzagging across the main façade. The architectural themes and displays have been translated into a lighting installation that align with the aesthetic requirements of the space, while incorporating environmental criteria.
PRODUCT INSTALLATION

The goal of the project was to create a low-resolution media façade to display video content, while integrating unobtrusive lighting fixtures into the existing architecture. In order to meet the project requirements, GRIVEN engineered a bespoke LED fitting to be installed in the interspace behind the windows delivering the illusion of a massive, uninterrupted screen. The main challenge of this project was the varying window dimensions, the random inclined windowsills and the mandatory homogeneous indirect light effect.

Mixing flexible design solutions with smart engineering applications, GRIVEN’s project team accomplished an outstanding result, in full compliance with the strict illumination and "noise” pollution levels defined by the local district regulations.

Over 2.000 custom linear LED modules of the PARADE series with independent pixel control were engineered and manufactured in Italy to meet the design specifications and site requirements. The PARADE series features unquestionably powerful luminous flux with uniform color coverage even on close-up application, for truly powerful wall grazing effects, especially on large-scale architectural elements. Responding to the most innovative lighting design needs, its independent pixel version has been specifically developed to create dynamic visual concepts on large-scale architectural spaces, where video animation or graphic patterns can be displayed.

Another 400 linear dynamic white light profiles, supplied to enhance the sea-wave patterns of the kinetic panels on the podium, and an additional array of 600W floodlights complete the all-round choreography. The intelligent light management system provides for the comprehensive and user-friendly control of the personalized video graphics and animations.

The project manager Mr Ammar Jano, who has followed all the phases of this huge project with his usual professionalism and 360° competence, proudly asserts: "Because we love what we do, we overcome even the biggest challenges. This time, it wouldn’t have been possible without the support we received from the Griven team”.
