Consorcio Office Building, Santiago de Chile

Chile
New lighting perspectives

Designed in 1990 by the architects Enrique Browne and Borja Huidobro, the Consorcio Office Building is, since its completion in 1993, a true landmark in the metropolitan area of Santiago De Chile, as well as a world-renowned example of architectural biodiversity.

Standing out for its unique architecture and sustainable urbanism, this 17-storey building features a jaw-dropping vertical garden of about 3,000 sqm. Its sun-exposed side is entirely covered by deciduous vegetation gorgeously flourishing in summer and taking on a beautiful red tone in autumn. Owing to a climbing vine supported by a lattice structure, this wall has the incredible ability to absorb 48% less heat in hot seasons, resulting in energy savings for office air conditioning. With the arrival of the winter, the vine leaves fall letting the sun's rays free to enter through the large windows, naturally warming up and enlightening the indoor office spaces.

Lighting design

In 2020, a new sustainable LED lighting system was required to replace the existing metal halide equipment. According to the lighting design of Taller Dos studio, the four different levels of the façade had to be illuminated with dramatic accent lighting effects in a soft shade of warm white with a touch of color on the upper crowning canopy.

The three stepped levels of the façade are fitted with large lattices, which support the vines allowing them to grow upwards. The lattices have been backlit, by LED lighting fixtures of varying power, depending on the height of the section. 22 Powershine MK2 S Easy Edition units in warm white color configuration with vertically set elliptical wide optics have been installed on the lower section of the building to deliver a pleasant striped effect on each of the installed lattices. The central area, slightly lower in height, is illuminated by an array of Emerald in the same shade of warm white with elliptical wide optics. The third section is covered by Coral units in the on-off white light version Easy Edition. To complete the lighting scheme, the upper crowning canopy is enhanced in bright colors by a series of Coral units in RGBW color configuration.

The lighting enhances the dramatic façade of the building and produces an irregular and contrasting pattern made up of vines and sets of metal lattices and tensioners. The effect is dynamic, since it changes according to the diverse densities that the foliage presents during the different seasons of the year, making this unusual building even more attractive and unique.
